Fruit Tree Volunteer
Organisation:Tom Adams Fruit Tree Nursery
Opportunity Details:

Do you enjoy being outdoors?  Tom Adams Fruit Tree Nursery is looking for volunteers to help with tasks such as planting, pruning and caring for the fruit trees at our nursery.  Volunteers can also help with ground preparation and maintenance.  There are also opportunities to learn skills such as use of organic principles, biodiversity and grafting.  We grow a range of fruit trees including some rare local heritage varieties.  Our small friendly teem of volunteers meet on a Monday - coffee and cake provided.  The nursery is also looking for volunteers that can help to promote the work that they do and update social media platforms.

Skill / Requirements:No previous skills or experience needed.  We are looking for enthusiastic people who are keen to be involved and keen to learn.  However, you will need to be physically able to work outdoors and having your own transport is essential because of our rural location.

Volunteer Partnership member
Organisation:Three Parishes Big Local
Opportunity Details:

Three Parishes Big Local is a programme which is managing the investment of £1 million of Big Lottery funding in the villages of Gobowen, St Martins and Weston Rhyn.  The money is spent on activities aimed at improving the area, making it an even better place to live.  The Partnership is a group of local residents and representatives that run the programme.  We meet once a month and then involve ourselves in projects as much or as little as time allows.  We actively encourage people in the area to play their part in supporting Big Local and its activities, ensure that local concerns are addressed wherever possible and provide a clear steer on priorities based on local knowledge.  

Skill / Requirements:The only requirement is to have a genuine interest in improving the area and the lives of the people that live there.  Any experience and local knowledge that you can bring would be beneficial.

Community Meals Volunteer
Organisation:Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council
Opportunity Details:

This is a great opportunity to give back to your local community and help those in need of a hot meal by giving up just a few hours of your time each month.  The Community Meals Service offers delivery of a hot meal to residents from Selattyn, Gobowen and Whittington Parishes.  Most of the recipients are older people who struggle to prepare their own meals.  This service ensures that they have a good meal up to three times per week.  Deliveries take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  The food is prepared by the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital where volunteers collect them and distribute to recipients between 11:30am and 1pm.  Volunteers work on a rote and can select which of these days is most suitable for them.  

Skill / Requirements:Volunteers need to be able to spare just a few hours each month.  The ability to drive is beneficial, but not essential, as our volunteers work in pairs.  Volunteers do need to be reasonably physically able.

Session Helpers
Organisation:St Martins Rainbows and Brownies
Opportunity Details:

St Martins Rainbows and Brownies are looking for volunteers who would like to contribute to the running of either of theirs sessions in St Martins.  These sessions can involve activities such as crafts, community projects, fundraising and going on trips out.  Rainbows and Brownies are valuable opportunities for girls to try new things, meet other people their own age and build confidence.  Rainbows meet on a Monday 6pm-7pm and Brownies meet on a Tuesday 6pm-7pm.  The group would also welcome volunteers who can help with their admin such as taking payments, banking money and managing new memberships, gift aid etc.

Skill / Requirements:Good communication skills, a love of children, patience and enthusiasm.  No previous experience needed.  Training can be provided on things such as First Aid and Child Safety and there is also an opportunity to undertake GirlGuiding Leader training.

Admin Support Volunteers
Organisation:Gobowen Central, St Martins Road, Gobowen.
Opportunity Details:Gobowen Central are looking for volunteers who can spare a few hours a week to assist with the day to day development of Gobowen Central into a thriving hub for the local community.  The role will depend on which tasks suit you, but could include dealing with room bookings and hire enquiries (usually via email), supporting new partners and groups that use the space, promoting library events and gathering feedback as well as exploring funding possibilities and attending development meetings.  Some of this role can be done from home
Skill / Requirements:The role will suit someone who is approachable and passionate about developing Gobowen Central into a thriving venue and resource for the community and making it a success.  IT skills are desirable

Outdoor Nature Conservation
Organisation: Bryn Y Castell Coppice Conservation Group – Gobowen
Opportunity Details: Work Days: Usually a Saturday morning 0900-1100 (or 0930 in winter) average of every 6 weeks in summer. We use garden tools and occasionally a strimmer. Location: Woodland at back corner of Gobowen playing field
Volunteers are welcome to join in on working days and / or join the committee
Skill / Requirements: Ability to dig small holes for planting!
Activites: Pruning, Sowing seeds, clearing, bird / animal / insect surveys. Monitoring of habitat throughout seasons.

‘Friends’ Volunteer
Organisation:Gobowen Central Library
Opportunity Details:This is an opportunity to join a group of enthusiastic volunteers that help out with a range of activities and events at Gobowen Central.  This could include regular children's activities, coffee mornings or community events.  This is a great chance to get more involved in the local community, meet new people and make a positive difference to the neighbourhood.
Skill / Requirements:We are looking for someone who is friendly, approachable and community minded.  Local knowledge would be an advantage.

Accounts Volunteer
Organisation:Weston Rhyn Village Institute
Opportunity Details:We are looking for a volunteer with and administrative and bookkeeping background, who can spare around a day a week to help with the management of the Village Institute, a one hundred year old community facility. The role involves managing the accounts for the building including invoicing for hires as well as preparing the annual accounts and submitting reports the parish council. The volunteer will also need to prepare the returns required by the Charity Commission. Our accounts are done in spreadsheets and we have an auditor who checks the figures. We meet once a month on a Monday.

Skill / Requirements:Previous admin and bookkeeping experience is essential. We are looking for someone who has a day a week, or so, to spare to help us preserve this community facility for future generations.

Archivist Volunteer
Organisation:Derwen College
Opportunity Details:As Derwen College make plans to celebrate their 90 th birthday in 2017 we are looking to share the history of the college since its founding in 1927 by Dame Agnes Hunt. The college has a collection of official documents, photographs, letters and memorabilia that they feel should be on display for the public to see. We need a volunteer to assist us with organising and archiving these materials.
Skill / Requirements:

Ability to work independent, and awareness of confidentiality are important. Previous experience of archiving or librarianship would be ideal. The hours for this role are flexible and it is required for around 6-12 months.

Garden Centre and Conservation Volunteer
Organisation:Derwen College
Opportunity Details:The Derwen Garden Centre offers a range of nursery stock. Students are widely involved in the seed sowing, potting-on and selling of plants on display at the Derwen College Garden Centre, but we are looking for volunteers to work alongside our staff and students with tasks such as planting, potting on, watering plants and creating displays.
Skill / Requirements:Previous experience of horticulture or conservation would be ideal, as would previous experience of working with people with learning disabilities.

Groundsperson
Organisation:Weston Rhyn Village Institute
Opportunity Details:We are looking for an experienced gardener to help for a day or so to help our caretaker with tasks such as weeding and cutting back.
Skill / Requirements:Previous experience of gardening is ideal, as well as a reliable nature. Will need to be reasonably physically fit.

Reception Volunteer
Organisation:St Martins Centre
Opportunity Details:This is great opportunity to be a part of a thriving community centre. The role involves manning the reception at the centre, meeting and greeting visitors, taking room bookings, setting up rooms and organising the weekly book box. The St Martins Centre is a fabulous facility in the middle of village for everyone to use and we rely completely on volunteers to keep it open.
Skill / Requirements:Most of all we are looking for someone with cheerful personality, computer experience would be an advantage but is not essential. The centre is open 10am-2pm on 5 days a week, anyone who can spare as little as a couple of hours a week can volunteer with us.

School Saver Co-ordinators
Organisation:FAIRshare Credit Union
Opportunity Details:

"FAIRshare works in partnership with local schools to help young people get into the savings habit and learn money management skills. We are looking for volunteers to help support Gobowen School Savers Club. Children take an active role in the running the Savers Club and are assigned Officer posts. These Officers run the collection points each Friday, where members can come and deposit money.
The volunteers role involves supporting the collection point, banking the money at the end and liaising with FAIRshare. Volunteers will also be dealing with any issues such as lost payment cards and helping to publicise the club around the school in order to encourage more children to save with us.

This project is currently operating in Gobowen Primary School and we are looking to develop the scheme in other local schools"

Skill / Requirements:We are looking for people who share our passion for helping young people to learn money management skills and promoting a savings habit. Ideally volunteers would have some local knowledge and be free for an hour or so each Friday. Times can be flexible.

St Martins Day Centre Organiser
Organisation:Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin
Opportunity Details:

"We are looking for a volunteer to be an organiser for our Day Centre. This includes developing our programme of activities and maintaining paperwork for the centre, including updating members details as well as day to day helping at the centre and leading a small team of volunteers.
We have 16 members at our Day Centre that come along weekly. We provide transport and a hot meal. We also provide varied activities such as arts sessions, poetry readings, exercise classes and outings. Many of our members live alone and sometimes this is their only social event."

Skill / Requirements: Volunteers for this role will need good communication skills and awareness of the needs of older people. It is important that all our members are treated as individuals.
The day centre runs every Tuesday 9am -2:45pm and volunteers will need to be able to commit to most Tuesdays as well as a couple of additional hours during the week as and when required for things like telephone calls, training etc.

St Martins Day Centre Helper

Opportunity Details:Are looking for helpers on Tuesdays to serve refreshments, help with a range of social activities and provide company for members.
Skill / Requirements:"We are looking for someone who is friendly, with good communication skills who is understanding and empathetic towards the needs of older people.
We need volunteers who are able to commit to most Tuesdays 9am -2:45 pm. "
